Premiering this Fall the Laredo Phil in association with the Dept. of Fine & Performing Art at Texas A&M International University and Laredo Independent School District is piloting a project to provide young people a chance to explore musical opportunity by getting involved in this twice-weekly after-school activity.

Students learn
Musicianship - music fundamentals and ear-training
     Music Appreciation
     To play an instrument

The teachers involved in this project are all students at TAMIU under the guidance of Profs. Huang and Townsend who actively recruit and engage students. This pilot project is being developed along the lines of the Venezuelan "El Sistema" project which has produced some of the worlds finest young professional musicians, including the dynamic Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel.

This pilot is being run in the south side of Laredo - an area where school drop-out rates are high, and involvement in drug and gang activity is increasingly common. It is the intent of this program to prvide students with an alternative use of their time and through music, instill in the students the skills of
     Critical thinking
     Social and Civic Responsibility

Once the pilot project is completed it is intended that this program will be expanded to include a wider geographic area, more students and more opportunity for the youth of Laredo.
